If your work email operates via a Microsoft Exchange server then it's quite likely that one of your remote working options is Microsoft's Outlook Web Access.
I have had access to this from various work IT systems for a long time... and sometimes even used it when no other option was available (there are times when it is handy to be able to check your email from any web browser you can find).
In theory it should work just as well in Mobile Safari on iOS devices, but I have always found this a fiddly and painful way of emailing.
Last year though I realised there was a way to make the experience much less painful. Enter Outlook Mail Pro, which is a universal iPad and iPhone app, which accesses this same OWA web service with a much more iOS friendly front-end.
Rather than fiddling around in the browser, you have the same access to your email through something which looks basically like a real email client.
It is really simple to download attachments to open in other apps and it also lets you access your iOS contacts to complete email address fields.
I find this a good alternative to carting around a Blackberry in addition to my iPhone as:
- It isn't a Blackberry (hooray!)
- I only have to carry the one device and it is pretty much always to hand
- It keeps the boundaries between work and personal time a little tighter compared to simply having all my work emails land in my iOS Mail inbox alongside my personal ones
There are other apps available which purport to do the same thing, which I haven't tested. At £6.99 (at the time of writing) from the App Store it isn't cheap in iOS app terms, but in terms of convenience and pain relief I have found it well worth the price.
